Stunning Scenery and Exotic Wildlife Wildlife is not the first thing that comes to mind when you think of Egypt. However, you will find it is brimming with wonderous, indigenous flora and fauna. As a result, Egypt is positioned well for ecotourism.
Ornithologists will be in paradise here. Over 430 bird species can be found in Egypt (1). The country is situated on a primary migratory path, resulting in a diverse range of bird life, especially in the spring. There are some exciting species in the area surrounding Ancient Sands Resort including the endemic White-Eyed Gull, Osprey, Reef Heron, Green-Backed Heron, Brown Booby, Hemprich's Gull, Lesser Crested Tern and Caspian Tern.
The coastal waters are full of life. There are stunning coral reef formations and over 800 species of fish. Uniquely, four species of turtle cohabit in the Red Sea, the green, loggerhead, hawksbill and leatherback. Dolphins and the endangered Dugong or Sea Cow can also be encountered offshore.
Mangroves, which are protected by law, are dotted along the coastline. They are inhabited by a variety of wildlife such as the rare Goliath Heron and numerous tropical fish. One such specially protected mangrove can be found at the Sheraton Mirimar Resort, El Gouna.
On land, most of the wildlife is focused around the Nile Valley. Along the Red Sea Coast you can find camels, sand cats and desert foxes.
This diverse wildlife makes Egypt an interesting place to visit and the country is gaining momentum as a destination for ecotourism. A variety of eco-tours along the River Nile are already on offer and an increasing number of Red Sea based eco-tours are becoming available. The natural charms of Egypt are bound to draw more tourists to visit Ancient Sands Resort.
